#85 WEEKLY FOOD FOR THOUGHT FROM MERIU : THE DENGUE VACCINE - DENGVAXIA

-

Good day everyone

I am sharing information which I received during the 3rd Asia Dengue Summit last week. The summit discussed about the dengue issues and situation in Asia as well as Dengvaxia, an only approved vaccine (produced by Sanofi Pasteur) for dengue virus. This vaccine has been approved to be used in few countries. The Philippines, Mexico, El Salvador, Brazil, Singapore and Costa Rica where The Philippines has started mass immunization program in 2016.

In late 2017, Sanofi Pasteur made an announcement: A new analysis from six years of clinical data showed Dengvaxia provides persistent protective benefit in those who had prior infection. But for those not previously infected, more cases of severe disease could occur following vaccination. Following this, The Philippines suspended vaccine given to children.

During the summit, the experts presented the statement made by Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization ( SAGE ) on new recommendation on use of dengue vaccine.

"For countries considering vaccination as part of their dengue control program, a “pre-vaccination screening strategy” would be the preferred option, in which only dengue-seropositive persons are vaccinated. "

Dengue vaccine is a long waited solution for dengue yet there is more to do and more to know.

Best Wishes,
